Summer moving tips for moving companies and their customers

Every moving company knows that summer brings an influx of moving jobs. Even though most people prefer moving during the summer, this brings certain difficulties for them and for the moving company. Physical labor mixed with hot and unpredictable weather can cause difficulties even to the moving industry veterans. For this, we’d like to share some summer moving tips that everyone can use.

Water is your best friend

And this is not a metaphor.  No matter if you work for a moving company, or if you are the one moving, keeping a bottle of water with you at all times is vital. When you get thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. Try to remember to take a sip of water now and then.

Hydration keeps your body from overheating, which could cause a heatstroke. Here are some common signs you or someone around you suffered a heatstroke:

  • Dizziness
  • Lack of sweating
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Fainting

To avoid this or to relieve some of these symptoms, aside from drinking water, you should always carry a towel or cloth to dampen your face, forehead, and neck. Using hand fans or mist bottles can also help greatly.

If you’re someone who thinks about moving during these months, be kind to the movers and offer them water often.

Use appropriate clothing

If your moving company uses uniforms, it’s best to have alternatives for summer as well, made from breathable materials. During hot weather, everyone should wear light-colored and loose clothing.  Black absorbs light, while white reflects it.

Materials such as cotton and linen are breathable and will not cause your body to sweat more than it needs to.

Another very important summer moving tip is to always cover your head and eyes. Anyone with dark-colored hair is predisposed to heat strokes because the hair will get very hot under the sun and overheat your head. Baseball caps are great because they also protect your face from sun exposure. Sunglasses are also a must-have because they protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. When choosing a pair, make sure they have UV and glare protection.

Some of your belongings will need special care as well

Moving during summer can be tricky. Some of your belongings might not come out of the moving truck unharmed, because of the heat.

Anything that has the potential to melt will need special care and to be transported separately if possible. If you’re a mover, give your customers a list of potential items that might not fare well in heat and advise them on how to pack and transport them.

Electronics are some items most predisposed to heat damage. Computer parts, laptops, tablets, phones, TVs should be the last ones put in the moving truck and the first ones to be taken out. They should always be packed in waterproof containers because summer weather can be quite unpredictable.

Other items that you should take precautions with are leather couches, CDs, DVDs, and, of course, candles.

Turn on utilities at the new address before you arrive

If you’re a mover, this should be one of the first pieces of advice to give your customers when it comes to summer moving. Not having cold water and air conditioning could pose a risk to one’s health or to their belongings. Electronics and other items that don’t fare well in the heat should be deposited in a cool area after being transported.

Be mindful of food

Even perishable food can be transported if you use coolers and move it into a refrigerator as soon as you get to your destination.

Many moving companies work with organizations that deal with food donations. Anything that is non-perishable can be donated instead of thrown or left behind. Ask your movers if they can help you donate the food that you won’t use.

Summer moving requires a great deal of planning and preparation. Because items have to be put in trucks fast, they should be packed and ready by the time they need to be transported. It is never a bad idea to hire professional packers.

Because this is the busiest moving season, you should always book your move in advance. Request quotes from at least 3 moving companies to make sure you get the right price.

Pack a bag of essentials to have with you at all times. This should definitely include sunscreen and your medication.
